Cities
of the future are "connected communities" in the
same sense that they use wired and wireless communication systems
to provide the seamless broadband, 24/7 network of networks that
will connect every home, school, office, institution and individual
in the region to millions of others through the ubiquitous worldwide
web.
They
are "creative communities" that recognize the importance
of art and culture to a vibrant economy and society; and that creativity
must manifest itself in all its forms, in the workplace, in the
schools, and in our communities to create a learning, caring society.
Importantly,
cities of the future are also "collaborative communities"
- committed, civically engaged civil societies - the kind Alexis
d'Toqueville first wrote about in the mid-19th century in his well
known treatise: Democracy in America
These
central themes go to the heart of the work of the World Foundation
for Smart Communities founded in 1997 to help communities make the
transition to the emerging global based economy and society.
